Math Overview

Mathematics is a core subject to be taught every day. It is taught sequentially, aligning to the developmentally age-appropriate skills and concepts. In other words, students are introduced to skills that they are ready for and that lay the foundation for consecutive higher-level skills to be introduced in subsequent grade levels. The following is an overview or breakdown of the basic math strands taught for each grade level. This is just a glimpse of what each grade level looks like at each strand, which can vary from state to state. As with all curricular areas, consult your state standards and your state’s or district’s adopted curriculum. The major strands are as follows.

Number Sense

Number sense is gaining an understanding of numbers, their relationships, and what they represent.

Teaching Tips:

• Manipulatives are excellent for building number sense.

• Hundreds chart and number line are excellent tools.

• Counting and counting patterns—one more/one less, ten more/ten less, etc.

• Counting on and counting back to ±
